What is a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is a complete oral health check. At our pediatric dental office in Carlsbad, CA, Dr. Chris Dixon will perform a total examination of your child’s teeth and gums. X-rays will be taken to check for cavities. He will check for periodontal disease in their gums. He will even look for swollen glands. If any issues are found in your child’s mouth, Dr. Chris will discuss treatment options with you.

Why is pediatric Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry necessary?

Sedation (sleep) dentistry is used to keep children calm, not to put them to sleep. If your child is excessively anxious about going to the dentist, sedation will help to ease their anxiety. If they have trouble sitting for a prolonged period of time, then sedation methods can be used to help them sit still. Children are still able to communicate and follow instructions while under sedation.

What makes your child a good candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Is your child very nervous about visiting the dentist? Is it hard for them to sit still for extended periods? Do they have a strong gag reflex? Sedation may be used with some special needs children to keep them from making unsafe spontaneous movements.

What happens during the pediatric Sedation Dentistry procedure?

Dr. Dixon of Peak Pediatric Dentistry will review with you your child’s medical history and medications. Considering this information and the expected length of the procedure he will do, he will decide on the best sedation method for your child. Our staff will explain to you how to prep your child for the sedation, such as restrictions on eating and drinking beforehand. We check your child’s vital signs before sedation and monitored them throughout their visit. After Dr. Dixon is finished with his work, your child will be a little groggy until the sedation wears off.
